Sony’s BDP-S360 Blu-ray Disc Player delivers full HD 1080/60p and 24p True Cinema output, decodes the latest advanced audio codecs, and is BD-Live capable with your broadband internet connection (and purchase of external memory).
Design
Looking for a nice balance between the glitzy gloss of Samsung’s players and the more traditional style of Panasonic’s players, this Sony BDP-S360 can be a right answer for you. With its glasslike look, the front panel is dark and translucent. When you open the disc tray, the entire front panel will flip down, like the Samsung BD-P1600’s design; however, we found that Sony’s approach is relatively smoother. Overall footprint of BDP-S360 is very well designed with a slim 16.9 inches wide by 2.2 inches high and 8.1 inches deep.
The included remote has a great layout yet simple design though there’s one fatal flaw by lacking of an eject button for the disc tray. If you are used to popping open the disc tray before got off the couch to change discs, this missing piece on the remote may frustrate you, like us. One option to get around this issue is a quality universal remote, which the BDP-S360 is also capable of receiving an open/close IR command.
Features
As typical 2009 Blu-ray player, the BDP-S360 is Profile 2.0-compliant – meaning that it is capable of playing back BD-Live features, which are available on some Blu-ray movies. Given that BD-Live features have to be downloaded off the internet, you need to make an Ethernet connection and plug in a USB flash drive to store it. Although this technology is relatively new, we found that the BD-Live content isn’t that compelling.
Different from its comparable players from Panasonic, Samsung, and LG, the BDP-S360 doesn’t provide any streaming Internet content, such as Netflix, Amazon Video On Demand, YouTube, CinemaNow, or Pandora. As a result, this may exclude some valuable services from the standalone Blu-ray player like BP-S360, especially for people who didn’t feel significant difference between the image qualities of Blu-ray comparing to standard DVD. Actually, we are pretty surprised why Sony didn’t build those functions into this new Blu-ray player; while they included such services in Bravia Internet Video Link.
Bottom Line
Overall, the Sony BDP-S360 is a great Blu-ray player; however, comparing to its competitors with more attractive features, it is hard to recommend it. Nonetheless, if you are just looking for a solid, good looking player with excellent Blu-ray image quality, great sound, good DVD upscale quality, and lastly, no eject button on the remote, then this BDP-S360 can be a good choice for you. We would have rated it 5 stars; unfortunately, given the missing eject & mute buttons on the remote control, it only got 4 stars.
