“Does everything” was used as new slogan for Sony PS3 Slim. Unfortunately, the same slogan cannot be applied with its standalone Blu-ray players as they lacked the streaming media services, which are available on LG and Samsung Blu-ray players.
The aforementioned missing piece is about to change with the Sony BDP-N460 based on the company’s announcement on Wednesday at CEDIA 2009. Apart from Blu-ray playback, the BDP-N460 has access to the Bravia Video Internet platform, which covers YouTube, Slacker, and ultimately Netflix (through an upcoming firmware update this fall). Moreover, Sony mentioned that BDP-N460 contains a cross-service function, allowing users to find the content more easily.
Same as other players, BDP-N460 also Profile 2.0-compatible, meaning that you can use the streaming-Internet-enabled BD-Live features; however, you will need to add storage by the USB port to do so. Unlike the step-up BDP-S560, there is no built-in Wi-Fi; while Sony released that they design BDP-N460 to work well with the Linksys WET610N Wi-Fi Bridge (separately sold). Lastly, BDP-N460’s functionality is onboard decoding for both Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio.
- The BDP-N460 supports 1080p/24 playback of Blu-ray discs.
- The player has onboard Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio decoding and can dispatch these formats in bitstream form over HDMI.
- It also allows the BD-Live Web content and supports picture-in-picture bonus content.
- This player can be used with a wide range of online media platforms, comprising of Netflix and Amazon VOD, YouTube, and more.
Disadvantages
- The BDP-N460 lacks multichannel analog audio outputs, so it’s not the best option for those who own an older, non-HDMI A/V receiver.
- The player is short of internal memory, meaning that you must add your own USB storage device.
- The player does not have built-in wireless connectivity; you must pay for an optional wireless bridge to connect to your home network.
The BDP-N460 was launched in October with a $250 price tag, which makes it just a little more expensive than the street price of similar models sold by Panasonic, LG, and Samsung. However, with the competitive price of PS3 Slim at just $50 more, there might be price cuts from all entry-level Blu-ray players to maintain their attractiveness.
